Girls Football (Canon Breen/Sandra Kelly/CMNB Heats)
St Dympna’s girls put in three massive performances across a busy week of football, beginning with the Sandra Kelly Tournament on 24th April in Loughmacrory. A big thanks goes to St Therese’s for hosting and to the Kelly family for having us at such a special event. The girls who were the current holders were beaten by a single point in the semi-final after a heartbreaking last minute Glencull goal, but their effort and attitude were outstanding. They bounced back superbly when St Lawrence’s hosted the Cmnb heats on 29 April, recovering from a poor start to show real resilience and determination, battling their way to the final before losing out to a very strong Carrickmore side. With so many big schools in the section, reaching the final is a brilliant achievement in itself. This will be the first time in four years that the girls won’t make the county final day, which only highlights the consistently high standards within the ladies club. On Thursday 30th April, they got some reward for all their hard work with success in the Canon Breen Memorial Trophy. The tournament organised by Tiernan Sludden and St John's school was a great exhibition of football with nine very talented teams. Huge thanks to Mr Simpson, Mrs Martin, Mrs C Maguire, Mrs C Burns and Mrs Meenagh for their coaching and support, and a special word of appreciation, as always, for our school coach Tiernan Sludden for all his efforts with the boys and girls the past few years.
